<br />
The gallery received 626 entries from 27 different countries around the world as well as from 32 different states in the U.S. Artists were asked for their interpretation of the “Figurative” theme by submitting their best abstract or representational art for this competition. I've been doing quite a lot of digital renders featuring dancers recently, so it was natural for me to enter these two images.<br />
<br />
The exhibition has been divided into three media categories. Painting & Other Media, Photography & Digital and 3D Art. In addition, there is an overall Winning Artists Category, which is the “best of the best” and consists of the ten (10) best entries comprised from the media categories.<br />
<br />
The gallery included Special Merit awards and Special Recognition awards for outstanding art. Many of the artists in either of these groups could have easily been included in the upper tier of our winners, as their art was also exceptional.<br />
<br />
So it's a very special honor for me to have been awarded a Special Merit award for my digital artwork, "Dance Like No One is Watching."<br />

<br />
In addition, my entry titled "Pas De Deux" earned a Special Recognition in the Photography/Digital Art category.<br />

To say I am thrilled to have won these awards would be an understatement!<br />

<br />
Two of her posts really inspired me. Firstly, her December 30 post, <a href="http://kemstudios.blogspot.com/2016/12/advice-for-painting-growth-in-2017.html" target="_blank">Advice for Painting Growth in 2017</a>, talks about how <b>study</b> and <b>practice</b> are the keys to artistic growth. <br />
<br />
As I read the article I realized that these would be easy goals for me to accomplish this year.<br />
<br />
I had been wallowing around, and getting somewhat disillusioned because I was unable to create the kind of skillful pastel painting that I see from other artists. My pastel art was definitely lacking something and, of course, a lot of it is technique.<br />
<br />
So I signed up for a year subscription to <a href="http://www.arttutor.com/" target="_blank">Art Tutor.com</a> which has online courses and classes in everything from drawing to watercolors.<br />
<br />
I have enjoyed, on an off, the series "Painting Landscapes in Pastel" with English artist Michael Howley. I say "on and off" because I originally signed up with Art Tutor for a month over a year ago and let then that lapse. However, this was the first pastel I did, following along with one of Michael's lessons.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/--pz_IhtwAzY/WGqvZeNioTI/AAAAAAAAJHU/6giMZU6fr0Ix8jqV5rFVjDCYH5-7QviyQCLcB/s1600/simple_lakeside_landscape.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/--pz_IhtwAzY/WGqvZeNioTI/AAAAAAAAJHU/6giMZU6fr0Ix8jqV5rFVjDCYH5-7QviyQCLcB/s320/simple_lakeside_landscape.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
My goal now, having found my way back to Art Tutor, is to make a habit of watching at least one lesson per week, and <i>practicing what I have learned</i>.<br />
<br />
Today I watched a lesson on cloudscapes. Here is my first, rather crappy effort. I'll do this same painting a couple more times this week and try to perfect the technique and the feel of painting clouds.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9HvVuOCIyLQ/WGqrL5_aD_I/AAAAAAAAJHE/LS2urN8bGNwgdrLuil6_nVWSYW-887nLwCLcB/s1600/Cloud-Study-Setup-Web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9HvVuOCIyLQ/WGqrL5_aD_I/AAAAAAAAJHE/LS2urN8bGNwgdrLuil6_nVWSYW-887nLwCLcB/s320/Cloud-Study-Setup-Web.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That ties in with the second post from Karen Margulis' blog, and the title of this blog post, "<a href="http://kemstudios.blogspot.com/2016/12/join-me-for-paint-time-2017.html" target="_blank">#PaintTime2017</a>"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
In #PaintTime2017, the idea is that one chooses one's motif, sets aside regular time each week to paint and then share the results on Karen's blog and/or social media using the tag #PaintTime2017. <br />
<br />
In addition to the weekly painting, Karen actually challenges herself to paint each day. <br />
<br />
Since I'm starting a new full time job tomorrow it's highly unlikely that I will be able to paint every day, but I think I can come to a compromise and give myself the attainable goals of<br />
<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>watching a lesson each week</li>
<li>practicing the lesson at least two or three times during the week </li>
<li>posting the best of my efforts and tagging it #PaintTime2017.</li>
</ol>
<br />
<br />
It will be interesting to see my progress during the year. Jaynehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09993407315693699146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2009095133454509647.post-50831366899319490632016-12-20T14:19:00.000-08:002016-12-21T10:30:00.365-08:00Merry Christmas from Me to You<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I found a great website a while back that lets you add all sorts of animations to your pictures and save them as animated gifs. The site is <a href="http://lunapic.com/" target="_blank">LunaPic.com</a>. The site does not limit you to animated effects. It actually offers a full range of effects that you might find in Photoshop, as well as a whole lot more. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But it was the snowfall effect that caught my eye, so what better to do at this time of year than to add some snowflake frames and snowfall to some of my artwork?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So take a break from the Christmas rush, pour yourself a mug of hot cocoa and enjoy these animations I created featuring the Christmas and winter-themed digital artwork I have made into greeting cards in years past, as well as some seasonal quotations. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Each of the images I have shown here are available as Christmas cards on my artist website at JayneWilsonArt.com (without the animations, of course!) I've put the direct links under each picture so you can stock up early for next year!</div>

I was interested in learning about them because I was looking for a group close to home. Houston is such a sprawled out city that any art event I would go to in Houston usually involved an hour or more drive time, one way.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I was a member of Spectra Artists in Houston for a while, but never went to any of the meetings as they were far away, and by the time I got home from work (often a two hour trek), there was no way I could get to them before they were over.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I didn't re-up my membership with Spectra Artists for 2016 since I wasn't working full time.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I'm really excited to have joined up with Tomball Art League (TAL) and went to my first meeting today.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Since it's December, it took the form of a holiday painting party and gift exchange, plus everyone bought some snacks, so there was a wonderful spread of food. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was very enjoyable meeting local artists and after the business meeting, we were each given a 10 x 8 canvas, brushes, paints and a reference picture to copy. And while we were painting, we also got on with the gift exchange and the white elephant exchange, which were great fun. <br />
<br />
I got some lovely Christmas ornaments hand-made by one of the members, and my white elephant gift was some Tom Jones paintbrushes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's my effort, the first acrylic painting I have done in over 30 years, lol. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As I mentioned in my last post, I recently got my pastels out of mothballs and have been playing with them a little. So the idea came to me to use the same reference picture we had used at the painting party, but this time see if I could produce a pastel version of it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here it is in progress, with the reference photo picture above it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BQ7kfEopQhw/WEx2Ubxyl1I/AAAAAAAAI_w/KIuzVH4us2oHezIw9_s0L6GJV3LMaYq4QCLcB/s1600/DSCN0131.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BQ7kfEopQhw/WEx2Ubxyl1I/AAAAAAAAI_w/KIuzVH4us2oHezIw9_s0L6GJV3LMaYq4QCLcB/s320/DSCN0131.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's it is, more or less finished.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sP5X1yvAQAY/WEx3So4-lSI/AAAAAAAAI_8/0I1Hn_GafU8qCYdMc983or8-eKWf_bgBACLcB/s1600/DSCN0133.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sP5X1yvAQAY/WEx3So4-lSI/AAAAAAAAI_8/0I1Hn_GafU8qCYdMc983or8-eKWf_bgBACLcB/s320/DSCN0133.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was just a quick, happy piece. It was fun to do - I need to do more little studies like this. I should remember to focus on what I see versus what I put on paper. I noticed that my squiggle across the middle of the ornament is too squiggly compared wit the reference pic, lol. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's a closer look at it. (As with the other pictures, you can click on it to see a larger version)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vj1MfLd1zx8/WEx48RExiqI/AAAAAAAAJAI/iO9FbiGg-J8GvL4-zfHsl2m35nqItwyKwCEw/s1600/DSCN0134.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="215" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vj1MfLd1zx8/WEx48RExiqI/AAAAAAAAJAI/iO9FbiGg-J8GvL4-zfHsl2m35nqItwyKwCEw/s320/DSCN0134.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It's not great, but the more I practice, the more my observation will improve.<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
If you know me personally on Facebook or elsewhere, you probably know that a near-fainting spell in May prompted me to go in to the ER and have some tests, just to make sure nothing serious was wrong.<br />
<br />
I was shocked when the doctor told me that the CAT scan of my brain had indicated that I had multiple aneurysms as well as a tumor on my pituitary gland!<br />
<br />
So this summer I have had two major surgeries, as well as extended periods of recuperation.<br />
<br />
Art, and blogging about art, got put on the back burner while I concentrated all my energies on healing.<br />
<br />
I'm happy to say that everything went well and I am fully recovered from my surgeries. <br />
<br />
I do have one more procedure to go, which will take place in early December. But luckily it's a minor procedure and the down-time should be minimal.<br />
<br />
What better time than Thanksgiving for me to give thanks to the team of doctors at Baylor College of Medicine and St. Luke's Hospital in the Houston Medical Center for taking such great care of me and getting me through this?<br />
<br />
I would also like to wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving, filled with family, friends, and the things that make you happy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="180" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NpU5bmiuaik/WDXv5XQ6TEI/AAAAAAAAI7s/5-TP3HzdLPIYLSD6NO9OhW7Le719lOf9gCLcB/s320/Pumpkin-Harvest-Van-Gogh-I-web.jpg" width="320" /></div>
<br />
My "Autumn Farm Scene" is available as fine art prints and greeting cards on my artist website, <a href="http://jaynewilsonart.com/featured/autumn-farm-scene-jayne-wilson.html" target="_blank">JayneWilsonArt.com</a><br />
<br />
I'm getting back in the art groove again, and I've even got my pastels out of mothballs, so I will be sharing some artwork with you soon.<br />
<br />
Until next time...<br />

<br />
The winning entries were selected by the juror Laurence Bradshaw, Professor Emeritus of Art at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, U. S. A.<br />
<br />
Here is what Professor Bradshaw had to say about my work:
"'JAYNE WILSON of Tomball, Texas is a star digital artist as seen in all her works. These were all created using digital models, textures and lighting in the digital program DAZ 3D.<br />
<br />
The piece "Vintage Photo Studio" shows a very handsome woman sitting comfortably on a period chaise lounge sofa. The overall warmth and tone of the picture adds to the vintage character.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2nraAhrPj-w/VzTTPpd667I/AAAAAAAAIQY/OTHFPsbE6AMZGck5PvfgKVjeji7W9KdFgCLcB/s1600/Boudoir-Photo-Studio-Final-.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2nraAhrPj-w/VzTTPpd667I/AAAAAAAAIQY/OTHFPsbE6AMZGck5PvfgKVjeji7W9KdFgCLcB/s320/Boudoir-Photo-Studio-Final-.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Her "The Indian Pony", another digital rendering on canvas, is very handsome. The brown horse's head with the spotted body of the horse is something that rendering helps to create and here it works quite well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-S25YPfHzLgE/VzTUyxP_sNI/AAAAAAAAIQk/7Valbi3yEHcpX9-JuYc_poO0HbRNN3JkgCLcB/s1600/Indian-Pony-sig.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-S25YPfHzLgE/VzTUyxP_sNI/AAAAAAAAIQk/7Valbi3yEHcpX9-JuYc_poO0HbRNN3JkgCLcB/s320/Indian-Pony-sig.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
"A Night on the Town" captures a handsome rendering of a woman and man dressed to impress. The background really sparks the awesomeness of the two together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GFlCSyv0dP4/VzTVpwGgcCI/AAAAAAAAIQs/YBO20EYv1rAAwCPleFf85iAQc0tXVlvcQCLcB/s1600/Bokeh-Couple2-sig.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GFlCSyv0dP4/VzTVpwGgcCI/AAAAAAAAIQs/YBO20EYv1rAAwCPleFf85iAQc0tXVlvcQCLcB/s320/Bokeh-Couple2-sig.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Also, "White Horse in the Forest" shows her talent with the beautiful horse center stage with the scraggling tree limbs which is a nice contrast to the smooth body of the horse. And the little gentle birds add a lightness to the mood."'<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oIv10p8KfeY/VzTWKDmjPmI/AAAAAAAAIQw/sD3PF9-WA-UdUP62W404C59kHJ1uszj-wCLcB/s1600/White-Horse-in-the-Woods.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oIv10p8KfeY/VzTWKDmjPmI/AAAAAAAAIQw/sD3PF9-WA-UdUP62W404C59kHJ1uszj-wCLcB/s320/White-Horse-in-the-Woods.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I would like to thank Professor Bradshaw for this recognition and for his kind words about my work.<br />
<br />
The exhibition will be featured online during May, 2016 at <a href="http://www.upstreampeoplegallery.com/">www.upstreampeoplegallery.com</a> and continue indefinitely in the archives section of the website.<br />

<br />
Oh, the Easter Bunny’s coming, she’s the one I long to see.<br />
She’s got eggs in her basket, she’s bringing them to me.<br />
I’m looking out the window and I hope she gets here quick,<br />
I need marshmallow bunnies and a little chocolate chick.<br />
<br />
Oh, I love Easter Sunday and it comes round every year<br />
Right now I’m so excited cause the Easter Bunny’s here!<br />
The Easter eggs are lovely, with swirls on them because,<br />
The Easter Bunny paints them with her little furry paws.<br />
<br />
We’ll take the eggs and hide them, all up and down the hill,<br />
And I’ll go back to find them with my little brother, Bill.<br />
We will pile up all the goodies and I’ll eat all I can take,<br />
And then end Easter Sunday with a big old belly ache.<br />
<br />
Oh, the Easter Bunny’s coming, she’s the one I long to see.<br />
She’s got eggs in her basket, she’s bringing them to me.<br />
I’m looking out the window and I hope she gets here quick,<br />

I'm very fond of vintage graphics and one of my favorite websites these days is the <a href="http://thegraphicsfairy.com/" target="_blank">Graphics Fairy</a> - a resource for DIYers and crafters and features over 5,000 free vintage images. I highly recommend the site if you like hand making cards and other printables. <br />

There hadn't been a storm like it in 300 years. Sadly 18 people lost their lives and there were massive amounts of damage to property and millions of trees were uprooted, many in urban gardens and parklands.<br />
<br />
The reason I mention it is because the following year, on a trip visiting my family back in England, we came across this scene in the New Forest in Hampshire. Horse power, in it's original form, was being used to help clear fallen trees and brush.<br />
<br />
As you can see from the image below, the trees are closely packed in this particular area, and it would have been difficult, not to mention dirty, noisy and messy, trying to clear the fallen timber with tractors.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Lni-NRB94-0/VrpwQ9xEjWI/AAAAAAAAHnw/ElLuw_npknI/s1600/Tree-clearing-Degas-Dancer-I-100pc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Lni-NRB94-0/VrpwQ9xEjWI/AAAAAAAAHnw/ElLuw_npknI/s320/Tree-clearing-Degas-Dancer-I-100pc.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
My dad, who was driving, had caught sight of the horses and pulled off to park so we could watch them at work. Two draft horses waited patiently while their handlers hooked up fallen tree trunks and then they would haul them a few hundred yards to where a truck and trailer were being loaded with logs for removal.<br />
<br />
It was fascinating watching man and beast work together. A very tranquil rural scene. I snapped several photos, but I liked this one best.<br />
<br />
I was recently going through old photo albums - those ones with the "magnetic" plastic pages that somehow never seemed to stick quite right and the pictures always fell out. I had been removing the photos and dumping the albums. Photos are either being scanned or stored in boxes.<br />
<br />
When I found this photo again, I was so taken with the scene that I wanted to make a digital painting of it. Working in Topaz Impression, was able to create an image that looks like it is straight off the easel. I'm very happy with the way it came out. If you click on the image above, you can see a larger version of it, and see more of the detail.<br />
<br />
"Gentle Giant", as I called my digital painting, is available on canvas, prints and greeting cards at <a href="http://jaynewilsonart.com/featured/gentle-giant-horse-at-work-in-forest-jayne-wilson.html" target="_blank">JayneWilsonArt.com</a><br />

I'm also making it available on other products such as mouse pads, a jigsaw puzzle and this iPad sleeve, in my online store, 3D Designs by Jayne on Zazzle.<br />

But first, here's a short video I made to show off my art and photography. I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you have a wonderful New Year!<br />

My family is on the other side of the Atlantic and my husband's family are scattered from coast to coast. So Eric and I will be celebrating a quiet Christmas at home together, just the two of us.<br />
<br />
As I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, I thought I would share some of the winter and Christmas themed art I made into Christmas cards this year, as well as some Christmas quotations.<br />

<br />
The results have just been announced and I'm very happy to be able to announce that two of my pieces won awards!<br />
<br />
In November the gallery conducted the 5th Annual “Animals” Online Art
Competition. 2D and 3D artists (including photography) from around the
world were called upon to make online submissions for possible inclusion
in to the Gallery’s December 2015 online group art exhibition. The
“Animals” theme was considered to be any art which depicted mammals,
birds and any animals that live in the water for inclusion into this art
exhibition.<br />
<br />
The gallery received 724 total entries from 39 different states and 22
different countries from around the world, including Argentina,
Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, India,
Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Monaco, Romania, Russia,
Scotland, Spain, St. Maarten, Sweden, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.<br />

<br />
My first winning entry, “Bison and Calf in Yellowstone”, earned an Honorable Mention,
placing it in the top ten entries in the Photography & Digital
Category! This digital painting is based on a photograph I took while Eric and I were on our road trip to Yellowstone earlier this year. It's available as prints and on canvas on <a href="http://jaynewilsonart.com/featured/yellowstone-poster-with-bison-jayne-wilson.html" target="_blank">my artist's website</a><br />

<br />
In addition, “White Horse at the Stable Door” earned a
Special Recognition, placing it in the top 60 entries in the Photography
& Digital Category. This digital painting started out as a 3D render that I created in DAZ 3D. The final render was then treated with digital painting techniques to give it a painterly feel. It reminds me of the cover art of the "pony books" by English authors like the Pullein-Thompson sisters and Ruby Ferguson that I adored when I was a young girl. This piece is also available on canvas and prints, as well as pillows and tote bags, on my <a href="http://jaynewilsonart.com/featured/grey-horse-in-the-stable-waiting-for-dinner-jayne-wilson.html" target="_blank">artist's website</a>.<br />
<br />
I was thrilled to have two entries included among the winners - quite an accomplishment with over 700 entries!<br />

You can see that post <a href="http://artbyjaynewilson.blogspot.com/2015/02/on-mission-trail-digital-paintings.html" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
Since then I have spent many happy hours working in Impression to create original artworks from my photographs, as well as using it to enhance some of my digital artwork created in Vue or DAZ.<br />
<br />
In my blog post today, I am going to share my latest series of digital paintings, called "Picture Postcard Cottages."<br />
<br />
I'm originally from England and whenever I go back home to visit family,
my dad always enjoys taking us out for a ride in the car to visit some
picturesque village he has discovered. <br />
<br />
One day, he took us out into Hampshire, to the village of <a href="http://www.micheldevervillage.org.uk/" target="_blank">Micheldever</a> located between Basingstoke and Winchester.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dXcnTkkdKfU/VlDoHwzBHWI/AAAAAAAAHXY/KJVmAbYxdE4/s1600/Micheldever.8.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="197" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dXcnTkkdKfU/VlDoHwzBHWI/AAAAAAAAHXY/KJVmAbYxdE4/s320/Micheldever.8.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It's the most picture perfect collection of thatched cottages and I took literally hundreds of photos!<br />
<br />
To create this series, first I took my photographs into Topaz Impression and processed them with a variety of painting and drawing effects, saving each version as it's own jpeg file. I primarily used the presets that come with Topaz, with the idea of blending and changing opacity and depth later in the process.<br />
<br />
Each of the final images consists of at least two, sometimes three layers, blended to allow the layer underneath to show through and with strategic masking to get the effects where I wanted them.<br />
<br />
I really like the vintage postcard appeal of this series.<br />
<br />
The first of the series is <b>Heather Cottage</b>, and according to the <a href="http://www.micheldevervillage.org.uk/archive_streets.html" target="_blank">Micheldever Village website</a> it was built around 1600. <br />

<i>The original property
was probably just 2 rooms, one up and one down. The bedroom still has a wattle and daub wall made of
dung and straw, and there is a doorway which is only 150cm high (less than 5 feet). </i><br />
<br />
<i>It would appear to have been extended during the 17th century, hence the irregular front timbers.
There is a small window looking down church Street and it is rumoured that it was used as a look-out
to warn visitors if there was a press-gang coming up from the river. The well is still inside the
property and was still in use in 1964.</i><br />

<i>The Old Cottage was built in 1580. The central part of the cottage was a smoke bay into which the

about 1850.

<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm not sure what the name of this cottage is, but it appears to have been built around the same time as the others. It's timbered, as are many other buildings in the village, and thatched, although an outbuilding on the left has since been roofed with tile.</div>

The problem is, let's face it, the heat and humidity of a Texas summer is not exactly conducive to such activities. Of course, that gives me the perfect excuse to spend time indoors working on art, or editing photographs -- but I do miss being outside like I would be if I still lived in England.<br />
<br />
But now autumn is here, my favorite time of year, and I can actually spend some time outdoors.<br />
<br />
For my blog post this week, I thought I would share a sprinkling of inspirational quotes for artists, as well as some quotes about fall and autumn. I hope you enjoy them.<br />

“At no other time (than autumn) does the earth let itself be inhaled in one smell, the ripe earth; in a smell that is in no way inferior to the smell of the sea, bitter where it borders on taste, and more honeysweet where you feel it touching the first sounds. That's it from me this week. I know my blogging is horribly erratic, but I'm making plans to be more consistent with it, so hopefully things will improve.<br />
<br />
See you next time!

<br />
When DAZ started out, their basic male and female models were Michael and Victoria. When I got started in 3D art, Michael 3 and Victoria 3 were the models of choice.<br />
<br />
I get a chuckle out of looking at my really early work because the models were still pretty basic and my own proficiency levels with the software were lacking. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RR3x3sltkjE/Vf3JM1Bzn-I/AAAAAAAAG7Q/qoGJeP4vgIM/s1600/EmmaPeel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="313" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RR3x3sltkjE/Vf3JM1Bzn-I/AAAAAAAAG7Q/qoGJeP4vgIM/s320/EmmaPeel.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
DAZ just released Michael 7 and Victoria 7, but actually I prefer the previous iteration -- Michael 6, and a female model named Olympia 6.<br />
<br />
Below are a few portraits I have done recently, using Olympia 6 as my model, which I have come to think of as my "Lovely Ladies" series.<br />

Iray rendering takes lighting to a whole new level and allow use of physically based environments so that with the correct tools and setups we can replicate real world lighting. (that's the theory, anyway!)<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Yesterday I purchased a new add-on for DAZ, the Ultra Genesis Studio 1 light set from <a href="http://www.runtimedna.com/Traveler/" target="_blank">Traveler</a> and <a href="http://www.runtimedna.com/Syyd/" target="_blank">Syyd</a> at <a href="http://www.runtimedna.com/" target="_blank">Runtime DNA.com</a> and thankfully, the creators provided a handy .pdf file of instructions on how to use the lights, the cameras and the environments.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm looking forward to playing with it some more and getting more proficient with it.<br />

<br />
I'm starting off by showing you how I re-arranged my office/studio this weekend. (I'll spare you the photos of the disaster area mid-move and go straight to the finished product :-)<br />
<br />
It's located in the original formal dining room of our house and when we first moved in, I had a smaller computer, and a little desk looking out over the half wall into the living room.<br />
<br />
When I got my new computer, it didn't fit on the desk, so I moved it over to the craft table, where I had a nice view of the wall and not much else. <br />
<br />
I lived with it for a couple of years but eventually decided I wanted a
change. I was cleaning litter boxes one day when the answer came to me... I
was in my studio and as I stood up after cleaning a litter box, I
realized that spot had a good view out over the living room and into the
garden.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yl8jFL3Tylg/Ve47TT8QsEI/AAAAAAAAGsY/ifjQyk5B1s0/s1600/new-office-arrangement.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yl8jFL3Tylg/Ve47TT8QsEI/AAAAAAAAGsY/ifjQyk5B1s0/s320/new-office-arrangement.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So we moved the craft table from one corner to the other, and now I can sit at my computer, and with a slight turn of my head I can see outside.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QxZN49wEIY8/Ve47oTPiU8I/AAAAAAAAGsg/Mw9Q9Bom1D0/s1600/View-from-new-desk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QxZN49wEIY8/Ve47oTPiU8I/AAAAAAAAGsg/Mw9Q9Bom1D0/s320/View-from-new-desk.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
My old computer desk, currently holding my old computer that I no longer use, will be my art desk and I'll put my pastels and paper over there.<br />
<br />
The computer will be given to the Salvation Army.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I love how the studio looks now. I just have to rearrange the artwork and photos on the wall. <br />
<br />

Usually we go during the Holiday season to see the River Walk all lit up with Christmas lights. But a couple of years ago we decided to visit the San Antonio missions. I really enjoyed the trip, enjoyed learning the history of the missions and took literally hundreds of photos.<br />
<br />
While I had some lovely photos when we got back, I never really did anything with them. They just sat on my back up drive, waiting.<br />
<br />
Recently I discovered a program called <a href="http://www.topazlabs.com/impression" target="_blank">Impression by Topaz</a>. It's a very powerful art program that lets you create beautiful paintings, sketches and watercolors from your photographs. I thought it would be the perfect way to create some meaningful art out of my original photos.<br />
<br />
The first paintings I worked on were <a href="http://jaynewilsonart.com/featured/mission-concepcion-jayne-wilson.html" target="_blank">Mission Concepcion</a> and <a href="http://jaynewilsonart.com/featured/mission-arches-jayne-wilson.html" target="_blank">Mission Arches</a>.<br />
<br />

<br />
From the Topaz Labs website:<br />
"<b>Impression helps make your photos more expressive by authentically turning them into art, the way a real painter would.</b>
Rigidly realistic photos sometimes leave less room for emotion,
personal feeling, and story. Instead of just showing reality, take your
viewers on a story by using Impression to capture emotion and feeling
rather than details. This can make your work both more powerful and more
personal."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lu6uQvaEpAk/VNrNtLs0piI/AAAAAAAAGBI/gHVJrCaK0zc/s1600/Mission-trail-arches-Degas-dancers1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lu6uQvaEpAk/VNrNtLs0piI/AAAAAAAAGBI/gHVJrCaK0zc/s1600/Mission-trail-arches-Degas-dancers1.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>

<br />
What's a visit to San Antonio without a walk along the River Walk?
I've always dreamed of being able to do a painting or drawing of the lovely stone bridges that cross the river, but I do worry that with the crowds of people that jostle along the paths on either side, I would end up in the water with the ducks! So I compromised and used Impression to create a colored pencil drawing, which you can see below, from one of the photographs I took on that trip.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-inRqjd3scl0/VNrQCEuEbxI/AAAAAAAAGBU/b14jZ6VCndA/s1600/Riverwalk-colored-pencil.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-inRqjd3scl0/VNrQCEuEbxI/AAAAAAAAGBU/b14jZ6VCndA/s1600/Riverwalk-colored-pencil.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is available as a print here: <a href="http://jaynewilsonart.com/featured/san-antonio-river-walk-jayne-wilson.html" target="_blank">San Antonio River Walk</a></div>
<br />
Impression comes with a lot of presets, which are all wonderful in their
own right. And in addition you can make endless changes in texture,
lighting, brush size and stroke to make each piece you create a genuine
work of art.<br />
<br />
These are only small versions of the paintings I made from my
photographs, but if you click on them you can see a larger version and
get an idea of the painterly detail I was able to create.<br />
<br />
If you'd like to try Impression by Topaz, they offer a 30-day free trial. Just scroll down to the bottom of their <a href="http://www.topazlabs.com/impression" target="_blank">webpage. </a>Enjoy!<br />

The sort of day to curl up on the sofa and read a book, or do some artwork, or watch a movie!<br />
<br />
It got me thinking about a 3D digital artwork I created some time ago called "Rainy Day at the Lake."<br />
<br />
I wanted a typical English scene - a cloudy, rainy day, with a family of ducks paddling across a pond in the driving rain.<br />
<br />
Here's the image. It's been popular on <a href="http://www.zazzle.com/rainy_day_at_the_lake_mousepad-144052095956157533?rf=238515284585015998" target="_blank">mousepads</a> and <a href="http://www.zazzle.com/rainy_day_at_the_lake_greeting_card-137428168519430654" target="_blank">cards in my Zazzle store</a>, and it's also available on canvas and as prints at <a href="http://fineartamerica.com/featured/rainy-day-at-the-lake-jayne-wilson.html" target="_blank">www.jaynewilsonart.com</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rSIHFcL3cfc/VLGcrtfaK-I/AAAAAAAAF54/ciq1I-45uyc/s1600/Rainy-Day-at-the-Lake.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rSIHFcL3cfc/VLGcrtfaK-I/AAAAAAAAF54/ciq1I-45uyc/s1600/Rainy-Day-at-the-Lake.jpg" height="228" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I thought I would get my blog started up again this year by showing how the image was made, the steps it took to create it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I created it in Vue, by <a href="http://www.e-onsoftware.com/" target="_blank">e-On Software</a>, a 3D digital art program.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As you work in Vue, the workspace is divided into four panes, each giving a different view of your scene. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The top right hand pane is the view from the top - useful for placing one element behind another. From above, you can see dotted lines, which show the visual scope of the
"camera" (the point from which the image is rendered). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The area within those lines will be in your render, so you need
to make sure everything is well placed. Outside those lines, it
doesn't matter and you can keep the file size down by not populating
those area with lots of detail such as trees, grass etc.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-n6MPqtcvNSY/VLGm1p0yZ2I/AAAAAAAAF6o/3FS7OV6rRdU/s1600/top-view.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-n6MPqtcvNSY/VLGm1p0yZ2I/AAAAAAAAF6o/3FS7OV6rRdU/s1600/top-view.png" height="180" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Top View </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Additional windows show you views from the front and from the side. All these view aid in placing objects within the 3D environment that Vue creates inside your computer. The bottom right hand pane shows you the camera view, this is how your final render will look.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-r-4MO5awMRc/VLGkGoBhE_I/AAAAAAAAF6c/GnHecXZZ7wc/s1600/Screen-Shot-2015-01-10-at-2.07.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-r-4MO5awMRc/VLGkGoBhE_I/AAAAAAAAF6c/GnHecXZZ7wc/s1600/Screen-Shot-2015-01-10-at-2.07.jpg" height="180" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Vue Workspace </div>
<br />
The main detail of this scene would be the lake. My vision was to have a grassy foreground, the lake in the middle ground and the far bank, with some trees and a house in the background and a stone bridge on the right, providing access to the house. To create the lake I added a standard terrain and began "excavating." <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5RhXx9qJwfE/VLGiXGlel1I/AAAAAAAAF6Q/Zqn3v3pG-xY/s1600/Screen-Shot-2015-01-10-at-2.06.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5RhXx9qJwfE/VLGiXGlel1I/AAAAAAAAF6Q/Zqn3v3pG-xY/s1600/Screen-Shot-2015-01-10-at-2.06.jpg" height="180" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Terrain Editor </div>
<br />
I'm still learning how to manipulate terrains but I knew this one didn't have to be too detailed, because of the viewpoint of the camera. All that would be seen would be the far bank. Everything else would be out of the view of the camera.<br />
<br />
Then I added a water plane and applied a material, one of a purchased set with the effect of rain drops on the water surface.<br />
<br />
The next thing to do was to add the atmosphere for which I used Vue's versatile Atmosphere editor and selected one of the stock atmospheres. As usual I made some minor tweaks to get the general look I wanted. <br />
<br />
Then I went about adding that rain. This was done by creating a cylinder object, to which I added a transparent mat that I created in Photoshop Elements with my raindrops "painted" on it. This was centered over the camera, so the camera was actually looking through it to the rest of the scene. I rotated it on the x axis to give the rain a bit of a slant.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rrtgeQnnlps/VLHDkyfVOFI/AAAAAAAAF7I/lGXs9-qNH0g/s1600/Screen-Shot-2015-01-10-at-2.07-rain.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rrtgeQnnlps/VLHDkyfVOFI/AAAAAAAAF7I/lGXs9-qNH0g/s1600/Screen-Shot-2015-01-10-at-2.07-rain.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Once I had the terrains and atmosphere done, I added the other elements, such as the house and the bridge. These were purchased models which I then resized and positioned along the x, y and z axis using the "gizmos" in Vue until they were where I wanted them, and in proportionate size.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PDiW32AtSh8/VLGrsuAcdwI/AAAAAAAAF64/C4aeUly4Aj8/s1600/Screen-Shot-2015-01-10-at-2.06-bridge.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PDiW32AtSh8/VLGrsuAcdwI/AAAAAAAAF64/C4aeUly4Aj8/s1600/Screen-Shot-2015-01-10-at-2.06-bridge.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The next step is adding the vegetation -- trees, plants, grasses. This can either be done by applying an Ecostyem to an entire terrain, or by painting the ecosystem only where it is needed.<br />
<br />
As my system gets bogged down by huge ecosystems that populate the
entire scene, I usually use the latter option and just paint them where needed. This can be done individually or with an airbrush type of effect.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rJHY31BgkPI/VLGdwgE222I/AAAAAAAAF6E/LG4XbJvn6qE/s1600/Screen-Shot-1.jpg" height="180" width="320" /> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ecosystem </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can see the red dots indicating the locations of the trees and grasses in this screen shot. As you can see in the top left pane, I only placed them within the dotted lines indicated the field of vision of the camera -- much easier for my computer to handle!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At this point it becomes a case of making test or preview renders, then making adjustments as necessary until I'm happy with the scene. I usually do lots of test renders and then, when I think it's complete, I usually do one more because I always seem to find a glaring error staring me right in the face! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But eventually I get to the point where I am happy with the finished image and can do a final render.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I hope you have enjoyed this glimpse at the world of the 3D artist.</div>

I'm still recovering from an upper respiratory infection that knocked me out this week so I'll just share a work in progress with you.<br />
<br />
As you now, I've recently started exploring the world of painting with soft pastels.<br />
<br />
One of the video tutorials I watched was about painting a dog's eye from a reference photo. <br />
<br />
Well since I'm a horse person, and I happened to have a good photo of my
horse, Star's eye, I thought it only natural that I should try to
paint it instead of the dog's eye.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rPStptzC9b0/U-_dfqJ_qcI/AAAAAAAAFfQ/WMBIB-wznmo/s1600/work-in-progress.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rPStptzC9b0/U-_dfqJ_qcI/AAAAAAAAFfQ/WMBIB-wznmo/s1600/work-in-progress.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I started it last weekend and it has languished untouched all week. I plan to work on it some more tomorrow. It has a long way to go!<br />
<br />
The thing that has struck me most as I've been working on it is how many colors are reflected my mare's black coat. I'm really going to have to get working on her smooth hair tomorrow!<br />
<br />Jaynehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09993407315693699146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2009095133454509647.post-7901803796889732582014-07-26T17:26:00.000-07:002014-07-26T18:16:55.429-07:00The Hay FieldAs I mentioned in a recent blog post, I have recently got back into painting with soft pastels. After several years of no art in my life at all, and then a few years creating art digitally, it's been fun, interesting and therapeutic to put pastel to paper and see what I can create.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UIPNJbZICBs/U9Q5c2q7h2I/AAAAAAAAFYY/I3L7OU4dUuE/s1600/creativity+is+contagious.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UIPNJbZICBs/U9Q5c2q7h2I/AAAAAAAAFYY/I3L7OU4dUuE/s1600/creativity+is+contagious.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The first thing I realized was that, if I wanted to work in my current studio, I would need better light. My studio is actually the formal dining room of our home (we use the breakfast nook as our dining room).<br />
<br />
My studio, which I named "<a href="http://artbyjaynewilson.blogspot.com/2013/03/introducing-mockingbird-studio.html" target="_blank">Mockingbird Studio</a>", is in the center of the house and although it's open on two sides to the living room and kitchen, it doesn't get direct light. That was fine when working on the computer, not so useful when working on an easel.<br />
<br />
I started looking for lamp setups for an art studio and found what I needed in the <a href="http://www.jerrysartarama.com/discount-art-supplies/lighting/daylight-lamps-and-bulbs.htm" target="_blank">Daylight Lamp.</a> It was a bit pricey, but I had a birthday coming up and I put it on my wishlist.<br />
<br />
My wonderful husband bought it for me for my birthday and we rearranged my desk a bit to enable me to use it and my easel next to my computer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CZHbK754oOI/U9Q8V7wGtjI/AAAAAAAAFYk/loc4IJMSg6A/s1600/DSCN4556.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CZHbK754oOI/U9Q8V7wGtjI/AAAAAAAAFYk/loc4IJMSg6A/s1600/DSCN4556.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This will enable me to view video tutorials while I'm working alongside at my easel. I love it!<br />
<br />
Anyway, on to my latest artwork (sneak preview above).<br />
<br />
On the way home from seeing my horse at the barn last weekend, I caught sight of a lovely view that I really wanted to try and paint in pastels. If I had my camera with me, I probably would have stopped and taken a reference photo. As it was I tried to commit it to memory as I sped by and when I got home, I did something I haven't done in decades - I sketched the scene!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aK_mrL2Uu8Q/U9Q-m-QPkHI/AAAAAAAAFYw/fiMlEKturIs/s1600/DSCN4557.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aK_mrL2Uu8Q/U9Q-m-QPkHI/AAAAAAAAFYw/fiMlEKturIs/s1600/DSCN4557.jpg" height="256" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As you can tell, I'm not a sketch artist, but I was able to get enough of a feel for the scene that today I decided to try and do it in pastels.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-u6pYg02T3UE/U9Q_qTr7lKI/AAAAAAAAFY8/s3ejwyaHHxQ/s1600/the-hay-field-on-easel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-u6pYg02T3UE/U9Q_qTr7lKI/AAAAAAAAFY8/s3ejwyaHHxQ/s1600/the-hay-field-on-easel.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I simplified it by only putting in two round hay bales, instead of the 12 I had in my sketch which I think would have been a) impossible to do and b) made the picture look too "busy".<br />
<br />
This is the first one I've tried to do from scratch, without following a tutorial or a lesson in a book.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X3vbsNlU3tA/U9RS9Ts7HGI/AAAAAAAAFZc/g-NELjJ_FZ4/s1600/the-hay-field-web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X3vbsNlU3tA/U9RS9Ts7HGI/AAAAAAAAFZc/g-NELjJ_FZ4/s1600/the-hay-field-web.jpg" height="256" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Naturally, I can see things now that could/should be changed to make it less amateurish but I think that on the whole, I'm pretty happy with the way it came out.<br />
<br />
<br />Jaynehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09993407315693699146noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2009095133454509647.post-34230511878611459572014-06-08T15:44:00.000-07:002014-06-08T15:44:23.496-07:00The Great American Road TripI'm originally from England and although I have lived in the U.S. for over 30 years, up until last year I had actually seen very little of it.<br />
<br />
That was when my husband decided to plan a cross country road trip for us. It really was the trip of a lifetime and we came home with a treasure chest of memories and hundreds of photographs. <br />
<br />
Our first stop was Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. The caverns were spectacular, to say the least!<br />
<br />
It was a first test for my new camera, and although not all of the photos were successful, there were a few gems among them. I thought this particular formation, The Chinese Theater, was especially photogenic.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YIOkr3xkHPw/U5SeeMztTLI/AAAAAAAAFIM/4AxPtCcyT_8/s1600/Chinese_Theatre.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YIOkr3xkHPw/U5SeeMztTLI/AAAAAAAAFIM/4AxPtCcyT_8/s1600/Chinese_Theatre.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We couldn't go on a Great American Road Trip without visiting the Grand Canyon could we?<br />
<br />
Unfortunately it was a bit hazy while we were there and for most of the day we didn't see the canyon in all it's glory. However, my husband booked us on the "Sunset Tour" and while the driver was concerned that we might not be lucky, in actual fact, once the sun got down to the horizon, it broke out underneath the cloud layer and we were treated to some spectacular views.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ykZ0EWVBW1w/U5Sh3LQd5EI/AAAAAAAAFIo/4kSYB3UgFpk/s1600/Grand_Canyon_at_Sunset.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ykZ0EWVBW1w/U5Sh3LQd5EI/AAAAAAAAFIo/4kSYB3UgFpk/s1600/Grand_Canyon_at_Sunset.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I was worried that our drive across Nevada might be a bit dull - miles upon miles of desert terrain. However, it was far from it. For a start, the "Great Basin" as it is called, is surrounded on all sides by mountains, which we don't have down here in my area of Texas. And then we kept seeing these dust devils around us. I was fascinated by them, and became determined to get a photo.<br />
<br />
Let me tell you, it's not easy to get a photo of a dust devil through the bug-spattered windshield of a car at 55 mph, but after numerous failures, I finally got a good photo.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4q2fqZGdTqk/U5ShNtveVtI/AAAAAAAAFIg/9NhSSy3vPsE/s1600/Nevada_dust_devil.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4q2fqZGdTqk/U5ShNtveVtI/AAAAAAAAFIg/9NhSSy3vPsE/s1600/Nevada_dust_devil.jpg" height="179" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Later in our trip, we visited Bryce Canyon in Utah. Interestingly, the 3D graphics programs my husband introduced me to when we met is called Bryce and was actually named after Bryce Canyon.<br />
<br />
Below is the promo image from Bryce 5.5, actually created in the program itself, and below it is a photograph I took from Ponderosa Point at Bryce Canyon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GrpCm8OmylA/U5TZxU849EI/AAAAAAAAFI4/n0X1yAx5nqM/s1600/00522137-photo-bryce-3d-5-5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GrpCm8OmylA/U5TZxU849EI/AAAAAAAAFI4/n0X1yAx5nqM/s1600/00522137-photo-bryce-3d-5-5.jpg" height="208" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Can you see where the inspiration for the promo image came from? <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A5fEVMK-s5Q/U5Sgms7TvuI/AAAAAAAAFIY/bwIEwGT7CXc/s1600/Ponderosa_Point_Bryce_Canyon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A5fEVMK-s5Q/U5Sgms7TvuI/AAAAAAAAFIY/bwIEwGT7CXc/s1600/Ponderosa_Point_Bryce_Canyon.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Our trip eventually took us across the Sierras to the West Coast. On the way, we stopped at beautiful Lake Tahoe. This is one place I have been before and can never get tired of it. I haven't even been there in winter yet!<br />
<br />
This is one of many photos I took as we went on a drive around the lake. I call it "Lake Tahoe Through the Trees.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NlQxQSOucVs/U5SdVHkQerI/AAAAAAAAFIA/0AdmVjyKqis/s1600/Lake_Tahoe_through_the_trees.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NlQxQSOucVs/U5SdVHkQerI/AAAAAAAAFIA/0AdmVjyKqis/s1600/Lake_Tahoe_through_the_trees.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm rather proud of this photograph as it recently earned a Special Recognition in the <a href="http://www.lightspacetime.com/newsletter/landscapes-art-exhibition-june-2014/" target="_blank">4th Annual "Landscapes" Art Competition</a> held by the Light, Space and Time Online Art Gallery. This was quite an accomplishment as there were 587 entries from around the world!<br />
<br />
Everywhere we went, in addition to being committed to taking the best photographs we could, Eric and I found ourselves getting ideas and inspiration for digital landscapes to create in Vue, the 3D graphics software we now use.<br />
<br />
Below is an image rendered in Vue of Emerald Bay at Lake Tahoe. I didn't create this - it was a sample scene that came with Vue when I purchased it, to show the power of the program. All I did was click on the render button, so I can't take any credit.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aWHn6x9tr1A/U5ThvcpS_UI/AAAAAAAAFJI/-VsgI0eraLE/s1600/emeraldbay_storm2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aWHn6x9tr1A/U5ThvcpS_UI/AAAAAAAAFJI/-VsgI0eraLE/s1600/emeraldbay_storm2.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Below is a older Vue render inspired by my first trip to Lake Tahoe, several years ago. I created this from scratch and of course I can find faults with it now. But on the whole, I'm rather pleased with how it came out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3oictzY6HfY/U5TjS9hp3nI/AAAAAAAAFJU/1855I_7iePc/s1600/Mountain-Lake.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3oictzY6HfY/U5TjS9hp3nI/AAAAAAAAFJU/1855I_7iePc/s1600/Mountain-Lake.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Some of my best photographs from The Great American Road Trip are available as prints and art cards on my website at <a href="http://www.jaynewilsonart.com/" target="_blank">www.jaynewilsonart.com</a> and I will probably add some more in the coming weeks.Jaynehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09993407315693699146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2009095133454509647.post-3511239635346168972014-05-31T17:26:00.000-07:002014-05-31T18:44:33.486-07:00New Tricks - Wherein I try out a new artistic endeavourMany years ago, while still living at home in England with my parents, I enjoyed painting. Nothing fancy, you understand. Just using reference photos to do small painting of English cottages and rural scenes for my own personal enjoyment.<br />
<br />
I've never had any formal art training, other than the basic stuff learned while taking my Art "O" Level (G.C.E.) at school.<br />
<br />
Then I got married and moved to the U.S, and art just wasn't part of my life anymore for many years.<br />
<br />
Since then, I remarried and my current husband introduced me to the world of digital art. This worked out great because we had opened our hearts and our home to a number of long-haired felines who like to get into everything. I could only imagine what a mess it would create if a cat went blundering through my paint pots while I was in the middle of something.<br />
<br />
Working on my computer, I can just turn it off when I'm done and not have to worry about having to "cat proof" everything.<br />
<br />
I'm very happy with my digital art and photography, but I've often wondered if I could actually still create art with more traditional media - watercolors, oils, pastels.<br />
<br />
Earlier this week, one of my Facebook friends Judy Adamson, who is an artist living in Wales, posted a link to one of her old blog posts: <a href="http://judyadamsonartanddesign.blogspot.co.uk/2010/11/5-simple-steps-to-painting-in-pastels.html" target="_blank">Five Simple Steps to Painting in Pastels.</a><br />
<br />
I was inspired! It looked like fun and I realized the cats wouldn't be able to knock over any pots of paint or water.<br />
<br />
So this morning after breakfast, Eric and I found ourselves in the art department at the local hobby store, perusing their offerings. I quickly picked up a pack of pastels, a pad of pastel paper, a kneaded eraser and some tortillons.<br />
<br />
Then I started wondering where on earth I was actually going to do this painting with pastels.<br />
<br />
My "studio" is pretty much taken up with my computer, books, binders and assorted other stuff. So where would I put an easel? Would I just paint on the dining room table?<br />
<br />
My questions seemed to be answered when I saw this easel. It holds art supplies inside and was of a size that could easily fit on my desk - I would just need to scoot my iMac back a bit when using it. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TuMAwzvbn2I/U4puaZgn5XI/AAAAAAAAFHA/QEkoubICv14/s1600/0057209000000-st-05-soho-easel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TuMAwzvbn2I/U4puaZgn5XI/AAAAAAAAFHA/QEkoubICv14/s1600/0057209000000-st-05-soho-easel.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
When it's not being used, it could be stored safely away and could even come on the road if I feel like doing some work "<i>en plein air</i>".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ovjxllg0W2k/U4pcmlkRGNI/AAAAAAAAFGs/JiNc8vu_M5U/s1600/DSCN4272.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ovjxllg0W2k/U4pcmlkRGNI/AAAAAAAAFGs/JiNc8vu_M5U/s1600/DSCN4272.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's a photo of it setup in my studio. I'll probably have to get some better lighting in there but this is what I have for now.<br />
<br />
I spent much of the day putting pastel to paper and had a blast (I didn't realize at the time that I could have set the easel to a lower angle for pastel work - shows you what I know)<br />
<br />
The work in progress is shown below.<br />

Not a masterwork by any stretch of the imagination, but hey - I'm still learning what angle to put the easel, so what do you expect? LOL.<br />

<br />
We met in an online chat room, back when they were all the rage, and maintained a long distance relationship for four years, before our wedding in 2007.<br />
<br />
During that time Eric introduced me to the digital art programs Bryce and DAZ and, encouraged by his sister, also a prolific digital artist, I got hooked!<br />
<br />
"Here Without You" is one of my earlier digital artworks, created in DAZ 3D. I created it on a long night sitting at home alone listening to our special music on iTunes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9YsL4--TxXA/U4EL1a7s2HI/AAAAAAAAFGQ/C_FpUG0VI4w/s1600/HereWithoutYou.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9YsL4--TxXA/U4EL1a7s2HI/AAAAAAAAFGQ/C_FpUG0VI4w/s1600/HereWithoutYou.jpg" height="320" width="263" /></a></div>
<br />
Not surprisingly, given the title I finally gave it, I was listening to "Here Without You" by Three Doors Down when I came up with the idea for this piece.<br />
<br />
I wanted to convey the longing I myself was feeling, waiting for Eric's next visit or the day we could finally be together forever.<br />
<br />
If you look closely, you'll see that she has an actual photograph of my then fiance balanced on her lap -- thanks to the wonders of 3D graphics programs I was able to apply the photo to a small rectangular plane and then position it on her lap like a much loved portrait.<br />
<br />
Even now when I look at this piece, it really takes me back to those days and everything it took for us to meet, get together and finally be able to marry. <br />
<br />
Not all online relationships work out, but I'm very happy that ours worked out so well.<br />

Not the sort of day we expect here in Texas in springtime.<br />
<br />
I'm not complaining though, because my garden loving the soft gentle rain we're getting. After two years of drought conditions, I won't complain about rain ever again!<br />
<br />
The cold winter we had this year, along with the lifegiving rains we are getting now, seem to have had a positive effect on the wildflowers for which Texas is famed. Even just driving along the freeway on my homeward commute, I smiled as I saw the medians swathed in bluebonnets, Indian paintbrushes and other beauties.<br />
<br />
The past couple of years were not easy on wildflowers and the patches of color were smaller, sparser and further apart than in previous years. This year is looking to be a good year for the native flora of Texas.<br />
<br />
I had long wanted to create a scene with bluebonnets in Vue, but was limited by the plant models available. Then I came across a way to make my own bluebonnets for use in Vue, by taking a photo of a single bluebonnet, making a mask with it and applying it to an "alpha plane". <br />
<br />
Without going in to too much detail, this essentially creates a little "billboard" that you can place in your scene as part of the ecosystem, which contains all the grasses and plants in the scene..<br />
<br />
If you click on the image below, you can see a larger view and you can see how many bluebonnets there are -- see all those blue dots? Each dot represents a single bluebonnet on an alpha plane, oriented toward the "camera" (the point at which the scene is viewed from) for best effect.<br />
<br />

<br />
OK - so it's not a 3D model of a bluebonnet, but I think the effect is pretty good in the finished picture. You can click on the image below for a larger version.<br />

While on that trip we visited the Royal Horticultural Society flagship garden at Wisley. That place is a gardener's and a photographer's dream, and since I enjoy gardening and photography, I was in heaven!<br />
<br />
One of the photos I liked was a photo of a beautiful pink orchid, taken in the glass house.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B6UlkaCx5W8/UuVKy4SBCMI/AAAAAAAAEzQ/ObiHtMcsDzg/s1600/DSCF1537.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B6UlkaCx5W8/UuVKy4SBCMI/AAAAAAAAEzQ/ObiHtMcsDzg/s1600/DSCF1537.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The photo on its own was a bit dark and flat, so this weekend I decided to try out some textures and blending techniques on it.<br />
<br />
I'm getting quite the collection of textures now, and I tried out several with this image, viewing them side by side to see which one I really preferred. (It's really quite addictive!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--FJdJ6UbhGw/UuVK5KqJmvI/AAAAAAAAEzY/2jeKMDjAY6Y/s1600/Pink_Orchid.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--FJdJ6UbhGw/UuVK5KqJmvI/AAAAAAAAEzY/2jeKMDjAY6Y/s1600/Pink_Orchid.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
In the end I went with © Sisley from the Spring Painterly collection by <a href="http://flypapertextures.com/" target="_blank">Flypaper Textures</a>, using the soft light blending mode. I really like how it lightens up the image and adds a painterly feel to it.<br />
<br />
Now I'm going to have to play with some more photos from that trip and see what I can come up with :-) Jaynehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09993407315693699146noreply@blogger.com1
